About The Southern School Of Popular Singing

The Southern School Of Popular Singing was formed in Salisbury in 1993 by Robin Gair, an experienced vocalist who, having started his singing career as a Salisbury Choir Boy, had become a major part of the Salibury music scene, performing with many of the city’s popular bands and supporting many big name acts.  He started the school in response to the obvious need for vocal tuition with a popular, rather than classical music style. The school was a resounding success almost immediately, with pupils coming from all over the south of England.

In 1997 Robin persuaded one of his more experienced pupils, Gareth Henderson, to set up the school’s 2nd branch in Southampton, which has gone from strength to strength, eventually outgrowing it’s beginnings at Gareth’s home and expanding into the spectacular River Studios music complex,

The School now has five vocal coaches - Gareth Henderson, Steve Giles, Chris Johnson, Katie Holmes and Dan Cooper with two more teachers currently training.

The School’s current team of vocal coaches are committed to offering the highest standard of vocal tuition, in a relaxed, friendly manner, using a well researched and highly successful technique developed in America over the last 45 years. This technique has over 120 Grammy award winning pupils amongst it’s successes, including people like Stevie Wonder, Kelly Clarkson, Michael Jackson, Michael Bolton and many more.

Although The Southern School Of Popular Singing can not yet claim to have taught names as huge as these, the school’s pupils already include artists who have been international stars and were number 1 in the music charts, leads in West End shows like Les Miserables, Music Week magazine award winning artists and at least 50 professional singers who earn some or all of their income from singing.

If you have a lesson with ANY of our voice teachers, you know that not only are you being taught a method that has a staggering record of success, but that the Vocal Coach instructing you in that method, has been tested and certified to have not only enough knowledge of the technique, but the skills to evaluate your voice, chose exercises that will work for YOU specifically, and demonstrate to correct way to do them.
